SI joint dysfunction symptoms

The sacroiliac (SI) joints are where the sacrum at the base of the spine connects to the iliac bones of the pelvis. When these joints become worn, you may experience pain as the bones rub together. This condition is known as SI joint dysfunction, which can have a severe impact on your quality of life.

SI joint pain symptoms

The most common symptoms associated with SI joint dysfunction are localized pain and radiating pain. This can occur in multiple areas, including:

  • Hips
  • Lower back, sometimes only on one side
  • Pelvis
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs

If you have SI joint pain, you may feel discomfort when bending over, when sitting for a long period or after standing for a while. Pain may also occur when you move suddenly, such as when you sneeze or cough. Pain may improve when lying down.

The SI joint allows you to perform two of the most basic functions: standing and walking. Without this joint, you would not be mobile. This is why the chronic pain associated with SI joint dysfunction can be so frustrating. It can limit your ability to move and to perform daily tasks, including housework and your job.

Treatment for SI joint pain

If you have SI joint pain and conservative options like physical therapy or SI joint injections have not been effective, the minimally invasive SI joint fusion procedure at USA Spine Care may provide relief. SI joint fusion is a minimally invasive stabilization procedure where a surgeon fuses together the sacrum and the pelvis to stabilize the spine and decompress an affected nerve. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.

There are a number of benefits to the SI joint fusion procedure, including:

  • Muscle-sparing techniques that spread muscles with minimal disruption
  • No lengthy recovery^
  • Small incision

At USA Spine Care, we understand how frustrating back pain can be and our goal is to provide the highest level of patient care to those who come to our center. Call us today for your free MRI review* to see if you are a potential candidate for one of our procedures, including SI joint fusion surgery.
