Three yoga poses to help treat a bulging disc

Bulging disc pain can greatly limit your daily activities, making it difficult to enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle. Bulging discs are most often a byproduct of the body’s natural aging process and the deterioration of the spine that goes along with it. Spinal discs, which serve as cushions for the spine, can begin to break down after years of wear and tear, making them susceptible to bulges when compressed. If a bulging disc puts pressure on an adjacent nerve root, symptoms such as chronic pain, muscle weakness, numbness and tingling can develop and bulging disc treatment may be necessary.

Alternative bulging disc treatments

Fortunately, for the millions of Americans who endure symptoms of this condition, there are a variety of alternative bulging disc treatment options that can provide symptom relief and allow them to return to normal activities. Chiropractic care, massage therapy and acupuncture are a few examples. Another option is restorative yoga, which can help stretch and strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, potentially reducing the pressure on the damaged disc. However, you should always consult your physician before attempting any type of exercise to treat a bulging disc.

Here are three yoga poses that can be effective for treating a bulging disc:

  • Camel pose. Kneel on the floor with your hands on your hips. Slowly bend backwards and place your hands on your heels while stretching your neck and spine. Hold for several seconds.
  • Locust pose. Lie face down with your arms at your side. Slowly lift your arms, legs, chest and head off the ground and hold for a few seconds.
  • Cobra pose. Lie on the floor with your palms flat and even with your shoulders. Slowly press down, lifting your torso, until your arms are straight. Tilt your chin upwards and hold for several seconds.
