Three dietary changes you can make to relieve pain from degenerative joint disease

Degenerative joint disease, also referred to as osteoarthritis, is a painful condition that can put a strain on everyday life. In a healthy joint, there will be smooth white cartilage covering the end of each bone, thereby enabling the bones to move against each other with minimal friction. Over time, however, this cartilage can become inflamed and break down, causing the bones to grind against one another. Degenerative joint disease can be extremely difficult to live with, as it can cause throbbing or aching pain, tingling, numbness, joint stiffness or lockage and limited range of motion.

In many cases, physicians will recommend that patients living with degenerative joint disease attempt conservative treatment methods before turning to surgery. Conservative techniques for achieving degenerative joint disease pain relief often include pain medication, physical therapy, exercise and stretching. The following three dietary changes may also help you find relief from the symptoms associated with this condition:

  1. Eat more anti-inflammatory foods. As noted above, inflammation contributes to the development of degenerative joint disease. To achieve relief from the pain caused by this condition, try eating more anti-inflammatory foods, including fresh fruit and vegetables, ancient grains, beans and legumes, healthy fats, herbs/spices and tea. You may also want to cut down on inflammatory foods such as refined carbohydrates, pasteurized dairy products, refined vegetable oils, trans fats and hydrogenated fats and products with added sugar.
  2. Eat more antioxidant-rich foods. Performing everyday tasks can cause the body to release free radicals, which can in turn attack healthy cells. This is especially troublesome for people living with degenerative joint disease, as their weakened cells may be more vulnerable to an attack by free radicals. To counteract the release of free radicals, try eating foods that are high in antioxidants, such as artichokes, beets, berries, broccoli, cherries, cilantro, nuts, oranges and spinach.
  3. Eat a well-balanced diet. Because excess weight places additional strain on the joints, losing weight may help degenerative joint disease patients achieve relief from their symptoms. Overweight patients may want to consult with their physician or with a nutritionist to develop a well-balanced meal plan that may help them lose weight in a healthy manner.
