Five tips to prepare for degenerative joint disease surgery

While the prospect of even minimally invasive spine surgery can be intimidating for many patients, this anxiety is usually balanced by the anticipation of long-term relief from chronic pain caused by degenerative joint disease. At USA Spine Care, our board-certified surgeons+ have helped more than 75,000 patients address a wide range of degenerative spine conditions, including degenerative joint disease.

Although the degenerative joint disease surgery performed at USA Spine Care is far less intrusive than traditional, open back procedures, there are still a few steps you can take to prepare for your outpatient surgery and make your recovery as smooth as possible. Before your operation, consider:

  • Cleaning your house. Cluttered floors can be a tripping hazard. Pick up loose items such as toys, shoes and pillows, and make sure all rugs are secured to the floor or stored away during your recovery.
  • Stock up on household supplies. Be prepared to spend a few days taking it easy. Having to run to the store for shampoo or peanut butter can be a hassle even under normal circumstances. A quick inventory check in the days before surgery can eliminate the need for unnecessary errands.
  • Prepare meals in advance. Cooking is another chore that can be avoided by having a few days’ worth of premade meals ready for warming. Of course, if you enjoy cooking, having ingredients premeasured and ready for preparation will save time and make cleanup easer.
  • Plan for your trip home. Although you’ll be up and about soon after your procedure,^ you’ll still need a ride to and from our surgery center.
  • Arrange for a helping hand. Some tasks, such as cleaning the litter box, simply can’t be put off. Having someone with you who can handle chores that require kneeling and rising will allow you to spend more time relaxing and recovering.

Learning if you are a candidate for one of the minimally invasive surgeries offered by USA Spine Care is just the first step toward pain relief. By following the above recommendations, you’ll be better prepared for your upcoming procedure. Contact us today if you would like to learn more.
