Can a chiropractor treat a disc protrusion?

A disc protrusion, also referred to as a bulging disc, is a degenerative spine condition in which one of the discs between the vertebrae weakens and its gel-like inner material bulges out. The bulge itself does not cause any pain, but if it begins to aggravate or compress a nearby nerve, it can cause severe pain and discomfort.

If you are suffering from the symptoms associated with disc protrusion, you can be treated by a chiropractor. A chiropractor is a health care professional who is focused on the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment of the spine. If you have a slipped disc, your chiropractor will develop a treatment plan that may include the following:

  • Manually manipulating the spine — in order to ease tension in your body
  • Flexion-distraction technique — which involves stretching the spine using a specialized table
  • Pelvic blocking techniques — which involve drawing your disc away from the nerve it is pressing on

If your disc protrusion symptoms do not improve with chiropractic care techniques or other nonsurgical treatment methods, you may find meaningful relief through minimally invasive surgery. USA Spine Care is the leader in minimally invasive spine surgery, and our board-certified surgeons+ have performed more than 100,000 procedures to help patients treat their neck and back pain.
