Stretches to relieve pain caused by spinal arthritis

Pain relief is the primary goal of arthritis of the spine treatment, and there are several different ways that this can be achieved. Many people use targeted exercise as part of their treatment plan, helping to strengthen their core muscles and keep their spines as limber as possible. When performed on a daily basis, even just a few minutes of physical activity can lead to meaningful improvements.

Not sure where to start? Try the following exercises for arthritis of the spine pain relief, taking a few minutes to relax in between each one.

Pelvic tilts

Lie flat on the ground with your arms and legs relaxed. Press the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet into the ground, then gently tip your hips upward. This can take some pressure off the joints in your lower back, helping with the symptoms of lumbar spine osteoarthritis.

Back flexion stretches

While still lying flat on the ground, pull your knees to your chest and lift your head a few inches. If it helps make you more comfortable, wrap your arms around your knees for added support. Stay in this position for a few breaths — you’ll feel a gentle stretch in the middle of your back — and then release.

Chin-to-chest flexion stretches

Sit up straight in a comfortable chair. Place your hands in your lap and make sure your shoulders are squared. Slowly tip your chin down toward your chest, gently pressing back through your shoulder blades. You should feel a stretch in the top of your spine.

Surgery for arthritis of the spine

If you’ve found that nonsurgical treatment hasn’t provided you with the results you need, you can also ask USA Spine Care for a free MRI review* to find out if you’re a candidate for minimally invasive surgery. While surgery isn’t necessary for every individual, it may be an option for people who don’t find medications, exercise and other conservative treatments entirely effective.
