Disc Protrusion | Recurrence

Disc protrusion occurs when the jellylike interior of an intervertebral disc seeps through a rupture in the disc’s cartilaginous exterior. This often occurs because of the natural aging process, which can cause the discs to deteriorate and tear open, but can also occur from sudden impact and forceful trauma.

Risk factors

Many of those who have experienced the symptoms of disc protrusion – pain, numbness, tingling and/or muscle weakness, spasms and cramping – are determined to prevent this spinal condition from recurring. In order to reduce your chances for developing a disc protrusion, you should avoid the following risk factors:

• Strenuous occupations that require heavy lifting or constant standing, driving, bending and twisting
• Obesity
• Using tobacco products
• Having a sedentary lifestyle
• Participating in high-impact sports
• Using improper lifting techniques
