Degenerative spine conditions and strenuous occupations

Degenerative spine conditions can be worsened by a number of factors, including occupations that require constant bending, twisting and lifting. Placing excessive wear and tear on the spine can lead to a deterioration of the vertebrae, facet joints and spinal discs, eventually causing conditions such as osteoarthritis, bone spurs and bulging or herniated discs. While these degenerative spine conditions can occur as a result of the natural aging process, a physically demanding job can be a significant contributor to spinal degeneration.

Degenerative spine treatments

Although an effective way to eliminate neck or back pain related to a strenuous occupation would be to find a different line of work, this is of course not possible for many. If a career change is not a viable option, there are many techniques that can help protect their neck and back from damage during the workday. Back braces and ergonomic furniture also can help employees to reduce strain on their spines and, likewise, reduce the risk of damage.

Sometimes, no matter what you do, a degenerative spinal condition will exhibit chronic and worsening symptoms. Pain and other issues from most degenerative spine conditions can often be relieved with the use of conservative treatments such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy and hot and cold compresses. If several weeks or months of conservative treatment fail to provide meaningful relief, a doctor may recommend surgery. Traditional open spine surgery presents a number of risks and complications, including failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS).
