What is scoliosis? Articles and information

Scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature of the spine, most often develops in adolescence due to a congenital defect, though it can also appear in adults because of degeneration, injury, infection or neuromuscular conditions. While some cases of scoliosis are mild and are relatively asymptomatic, more severe forms of spinal curvature can be painful and debilitating.

Scoliosis can also put a great deal of stress on the spine and may contribute to the development of certain degenerative conditions, like spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bulging discs or pinched nerves. Conservative treatments are often sufficient for people to manage any discomfort caused by scoliosis or a related condition, though surgery may be a consideration for individuals who have a severe spinal curvature.
