Common treatments for degenerative disc disease

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) describes the age-related degeneration of the spine’s cushioning discs. These discs sit between each vertebra, or the bones of the spine, and serve a similar function as shock absorbers. As we grow older, spinal discs naturally begin to lose water content and become brittle, which can lead to stiffness, pain, nerve compression and other uncomfortable problems that can negatively impact quality of life. Not everyone requires treatment for degenerative disc disease symptoms, but those who do have a variety of care options to choose from.

How is degenerative disc disease treated?

A patient’s ideal course of enfermedad degenerativa del disco treatment will vary according to several factors. For example, the patient’s age, symptoms and overall health will influence how this disease is addressed, as well as what specific portion of the spine is most affected.

If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of degenerative disc disease, the first step is to speak with a physician who can evaluate your condition and suggest appropriate treatment. Based on the factors mentioned above, your treatment may include one or more of these common conservative degenerative disc disease treatments:

  1. Hot/cold therapy with an ice pack and heating pad
  2. Estiramiento suave y ejercicio de bajo impacto.
  3. Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  4. Inyecciones antiinflamatorias
  5. Terapia física

Some patients also explore alternative therapies like acupuncture, yoga and herbal supplements to supplement conservative treatments. Be sure to speak with your physician if you are interested in trying any of these methods.

While many patients are able to successfully manage their degenerative disc disease symptoms with conservative and alternative techniques, some patients may require surgical care to relieve nerve compression or stabilize the spine. In these instances, USA Spine Care offers a less invasive alternative to traditional open spine operations. Our procedures are performed on an outpatient basis by board-certified surgeons+ and only require a less than 1-inch incision.
